His father had died when he was nine years old. At the age of thirteen, he was in a city named Oudh, at the court of Meeruz-ul-Zaman, the Ameer-ul-Umara of the Sultans of Lucknow.[13] Meeruz-ul-Zaman awarded him a scholarship to study at Madras College.[14] His uncle Mahmud Azam, a Court Judge, had him admitted to the Law Faculty of the University of Calcutta. He earned his BA degree in 1876 and was subsequently elected President of the Muslim Union. Since his family had modest means from agriculture, he was forced to abandon his studies to help support his family by taking a job as a probationary civil servant. In 1881 he joined the Civil Service of the Company of British India. In 1884 he was transferred by the Director to the Indian Forest Department, and in 1886 he was appointed as a Deputy Magistrate at Dharamshah. From Dharamshah he was transferred to the Revenue-Collectorate of Greenway, Bengal, and then to the Presidency Correspondence.[15] Khan was on special duty in 1890.[16] In 1892 a hand surgeon advised him to change his profession and study medicine. In the same year he became homeopathic Medical Officer of his village, Ballia, and in 1894 his feats were acknowledged by the State when he was chosen to the Executive of the Bengal Association of Homeopaths.[17] In 1898 at the age of 30, he was appointed State Homeopath and Lecturer in the Government Medical College. Another notable event in his life was the publication, in 1899, of an Urdu version of the Quran, and its serialization in two volumes, under the title Risalat-e-Yasir e Abbasideen ul Asan (\"The Spiritual Message of the Prophet of Abbas\") and Risalat-e-Qiyas (\"The Legal Examination of the Teachings of the Prophet\") - gathering his opposition to \"rational theology\" and theistic mullahs- - respectively.[18] Among his disciples was the famous priest and philosopher Baba Farid. Khan was elected to post of Provincial Superintendent in 1903 and died 27 December 1905.[19] By 1955, the university had 15 affiliated colleges and is currently known as Aligarh Muslim University.
