Plot

Mukul (Sushant Singh) and Soni (Konkona Sen Sharma) are identical twins and students at Bhagat Phool Singh College of Commerce and Economics. Their father, a postman, is a staunch devotee of the legendary Hindu goddess Kali, and is often seen performing religious rituals in her honour. Unbeknownst to them, they are two of the four sacrificial victims that are offered at Kali's idol every year.

Both Mukul and Soni are quick-tempered, short-tempered, and impulsive, and they often unintentionally do stupid things. Soni, who wears a Marwari attire, is usually annoyed by Mukul's status and fraternity. Mukul, being a good-natured person, and knowing his sister's wish to get married, decides to get them married despite their lack of status and common sense. He intends to use their heritage as an excuse to get them married.

Mukul attempts to fix their marriages, with one year as a deadline for the marriages to take place.

Mukul and Soni's father instructs them to avoid any love-birds, who are considered bad luck. Unfortunately, Mukul and Soni end up courting Vishwajeet (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a Jain scholar and a student of the college. They later decide to marry their cousins Manju (Suchitra Pillai) and Sandhya (Tena Desai), respectively. To everyone's surprise, both their marriages are a success.

Meanwhile, Mukul and Soni bond over the superstitions and beliefs they grew up with, and they realise that the two of them are very similar. After learning that Soni loves to gamble, he decides to get her married to Harish (Arunoday Singh).

On the night of their wedding, as the trio is taking their oath, Harish gets drunk, and ultimately passes out. On the way to the ceremony, he is caught in the crossfire of a fight between two brothers, both of whom claim to be his uncle.

Soni is captured by one of the brothers, and Mukul tries to rescue her. They meet the brother's uncle (Amrish Puri), and Mukul is captured in a ploy to force him to reveal the location of his brother's brother's hideout.
