In the early 1990's, an Alliance Films (a division of Universal) video promoted an upgrade program for older Betamax players which would solve many of the most basic problems with older machines. The promotion was so successful that the printer who designed the label, went back to art school and earned an M.F.A. in film design. In 1994, he released his second video, Mousehunt, as the best worst movie ever made. A film that took the best the home video industry had to offer, the best technological advances of the last decade, and treated it like you'd treat a mouse.
You know, I always said that the video business is better left to the corporate giants who can afford the production costs. We are a profit-centered industry, and when you target your audience with movies that only appeal to the die-hard wingnut in your audience, you are driving customers away. When I was an editor at Entertainment Tonight I was asked not to use one of the videos that my boss thought was in bad taste. I said that it was my job to use Eric's videos if they were good and the others if they were not. When I meant it, he got very angry that I was going to use their movies. I said that when I got to meet with the bosses I would ask what was inappropriate for them. And I did. At which point I was told that it was much better for the business if we thought of the viewer as a confused cretin. Nobody wants to give a violent sports movie to a college student - they only want to give it to them so they'll go to the movie several times and contribute to the company's profits. If they just want to see it once they'll just rent it on VHS.
