Biography
S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is an Indian singer-composer who. He is the recipient of various awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the prestigious highest award in the Indian cinema for the best singer in Kannada language cinema. GSR Rao has been conferred with the honours Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour for the Kannada cinema, in 1994, and the Katha Award for the best playback singer in 2010.
Balasubramaniam started music at the age of four when his father was inspired to teach him his favourite Carnatic music tunes. He learned Carnatic music for the first time under his guru, the. Jayalakshmi and Srimathi Savitri were his favourite singers and used to practice together. He learnt Carnatic music until the age of 12. He studied Carnatic music under T. R. Bhagavantam at Bangalore and later at Mysore and Kodagon.
Balasubramaniam’s career as a playback singer started in the 1970s..He is the first recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award for his singing in Kannada film. He has also performed with great singers like Rajkiran, S.P.. Balasubrahmanyam is one of the most popular artists from South India. He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, given to the best Kannada films, for his singing in the film Rathasapthami.
Late into his career, Balasubramaniam composed as well as performed songs. He won the National award for his composition of the song Hrudayalaya Ganapathi (I bow to Ganapathi), in the 1988 film Aarashiva (Saraswati) directed by I.V. Sasi.
