I personally would be ecstatic if a drum machine could do this automatically, but in this case the SD3 is really a drum machine with a unique, and very powerful, drum AI system that has the capability to mimic the stumblings, uniqueness and performance styles of a real drummer. Although I may be biased, it’s just not possible to see how a real drummer could perform the way that the drum AI in SD3 does in that video.
Another feature of the SD3 is its ability to capture the ‘feel’ and dynamics of a drummer’s performance (assuming you also capture the timing of that performance in a separate project). SD3 can also be used to play a real drummer’s performance, using the fake drum AI, in a pop up drum machine drum ‘kit’ on the left or the right channel. This is a very unique feature. Any drums that you play with the SD3 simply ‘fall in place’ on the real drum tracks of the original recording.
Now, once you have imported your AudioTracks.txt file into SD3, the dynamic editing process begins. The Drum Editor works very much like a slider or a fader. If you drag the slider (or the fader) into the middle position (or the middle slider position in the case of the fader) the automatic segmentation algorithm will divide the track into the number of bins that you specify in the Drum Editor window. In the example shown in Figure 3, we have 8 bins, so the algorithm will divide the track into 8 segments. Once you have the track segmented, you can then edit each segment to adjust its volume, pan it, balance it and even apply effects to it. The actual track will remain untouched until you drag the slider out of the segment.
The next step is to determine which drum sounds to use in each song. To do this, we program over 500,000 drum sounds into “The Library” (a drum kit library based on an actual drum kit). Each song is built by “filling” an appropriate kit with the best matching drum hits from the Library. As a result, the songs sound very different from one another but, with the exception of the two Songs 1 and 2, each song uses a single kit, as if it were a real drum kit. Also, a single drummer can play each song solo or in a band. 827ec27edc
